Dr. Margie Kitano, Associate Dean at San Diego State University College of Education and her team of researchers serve as program evaluators. They regularly conduct scientific research to study the OPEN GATE Program and its effectiveness.
One SDSU evaluation found that three of the OPEN GATE program literacy strategies used by its tutors had a statistically significant effect on student academic gains. As a result of this study, San Diego City Schools, a district that serves over 133,000 students, is now training its Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) teachers with the same literacy strategies for GATE teacher certification, and to be used in their classrooms.
Highlights of another SDSU evaluation of OPEN GATE student progress are as follows:
Comparisons with District and State Achievement Scores

These data highlighted in yellow reflect the scores
of 5th grade OPEN GATE students, all of whom are from low-income families
and qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. OPEN GATE students in this chart
are being compared to children from higher income families 75% if whom
do not qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. Back to the Top |
